GlobaLex and Its Mission

GlobaLex is an open-access electronic legal periodical dedicated and committed to publishing and disseminating high-level international, comparative, and foreign law research articles to accommodate the needs of an increasingly global educational and practicing legal world. Founded in 2005, GlobaLex is supported by the Hauser Global Law School Program and the Guarini Institute for Global Legal Studies at New York University School of Law.

The articles published by GlobaLex are used and relied on as research and teaching resources by legal academics, practitioners, and other law specialists worldwide who are active in international, comparative, and foreign law research or focus on their domestic law. GlobaLex publishes six issues annually, featuring new scholarship and updating the existing content. GlobaLex’sauthors regularly update their articles to keep up with the rapidly changing legal research and publication.

GlobaLex is committed to preserving the historical development of its content. Each article contains a publication statement, located above the Table of Contents, in which researchers can find links to the article’s original version, and, where applicable, to the intermediary historical versions captured by the Internet Archive.

GlobaLex contributes to the open-access movement by making its content available online and ensuring equal access. Researchers from the global legal community consult GlobaLex daily. Articles are regularly cited in an array of publications including treatises on international law, international, foreign, and comparative law research publications, law reviews, journal articles on international and foreign law, and court decisions. GlobaLex is referenced and highlighted on countless web pages dedicated to the dissemination of legal information and law research. It is also highlighted by entities, including the United Nations, the Peace Palace Library, and educational institutions around the world. Over the years, GlobaLex has grown into one of the must-know, must-consult publications.

About the Editors

GlobaLex was created in 2005 by Mirela Roznovschi, the then Foreign and International Law Librarian at New York University School of Law, with the visionary support of J.H.H. Weiler, University Professor and Joseph Straus Professor of Law, at New York University School of Law, whose work focuses on Comparative Constitutional Law, European Integration, WTO and International Economic Law. As founding editor, Ms. Roznovschi built, directed, and edited GlobaLex for a decade until 2015 when she retired. The same year, Mirela Roznovschi received the 2015 Reynold and Flores Publication Award from the Foreign, Comparative, and International Law Special Interest Section (FCIL-SIS) of the American Association of Law Libraries (AALL) for her editorial work on GlobaLex. Although now retired from GlobaLex, Ms. Roznovschi, in her Emeritus status as Honorary Editor, is a recognized literary critic, writer, and journalist who continues to publish novels, essays, and poetry.

In 2015, Lucie Olejnikova became the new Editor of GlobaLex. Ms. Olejnikova is the Associate Director for Foreign and International Law at the Lillian Goldman Law Library at Yale Law School, and the Research Scholar and Editor of GlobaLex. As the Editor, Ms. Olejnikova sets the overall vision for the publication and directs and manages the editorial and publishing process. Under her leadership, GlobaLex has focused on updating and streamlining the existing content, identifying new topics to be added to the existing library, and engaging new authors.

GlobaLex welcomes suggestions for new topics as it is committed to being a coherent and encompassing research tool for all constituencies. GlobaLex also welcomes and encourages new authors to join GlobaLex. If you are interested in writing for GlobaLex, please contact the Editor, Lucie Olejnikova.

In 2024, with the unwavering support of the Hauser Global Law School Program and the Guarini Institute for Global Legal Studies, GlobaLex launched its newly redesigned platform. This multi-year project featured structural, substantive, and design changes, focusing on improving search retrieval, streamlining navigation, and aligning GlobaLex’s appearance with NYU Law, while preserving GlobaLex’s scholarly feel and its own online identity. Additionally, researchers can now directly subscribe to GlobaLex’s New Issue announcements.

Recognitions

Only two years after its inception, in 2007, GlobaLex received the Website Award from the International Association of Law Libraries (IALL) recognizing the importance, impact, and potential of this publication. Thirteen years later, GlobaLex received the prestigious 2020 Jus Gentium Research Award, presented by the International Legal Research Interest Group (ILRIG) of the American Society of International Law (ASIL), acknowledging GlobaLex for its important contributions to providing and enhancing legal information resources in international law, recognizing Lucie Olejnikova for the excellent editorial quality exhibited over the years, and for being an outstanding example of an open access repository for foreign and international law research resources.

About the Authors

GlobaLex authors are scholars who are known in their respective fields and are recommended by universities, law schools, library schools, and legal training institutions. Our global network of authors includes law librarians, professors, judges, lawyers, Ph.D. and LLM candidates, former government officials, and many other legal information professionals. GlobaLex is committed to its global network of established authors who bring their scholarly and practical perspectives, and who often create a window into a jurisdiction’s culture, history, and political system. GlobaLex is also committed to creating opportunities for newer scholars from around the world.

The Foreign Law Research article collection contains articles representing most of the world’s jurisdictions. Nevertheless, GlobaLex continues to add entries for jurisdictions and territories not listed and welcomes new authors into our network. Most recently, where applicable, our authors began issuing articles in two languages, such as Togo or Côte d’Ivoire, to reach wider audiences.

In addition to the expansive foreign law articles collection, GlobaLex authors have contributed to a variety of international and comparative law subjects including public and private international law, customary international law, human rights, international commercial law, dispute settlement, international environmental law, international criminal law, international trade, and WTO, as well as comparative pieces on immigration, constitutional law, procedural law, religious law, data privacy, and more. Since its inception, GlobaLex has continued to expand to cover a variety of international law topics in response to new developments and has featured comparative articles surveying jurisdictions on a particular topic.

Recommended Citation

Each article contains a publication statement listing the publication date of the article’s most recent version, and, for historical research, links to the original version as well as the intermediary historical versions. The intermediary versions link to Internet Archives, while GlobaLex preserves the originals. When constructing a citation, it is recommended to note which version is being cited by indicating the corresponding date and URL. When appropriate, URLs can be embedded into article titles.
